- Common scams — faux guides, tannery pressure, misdirection: Fes el Bali is a maze, and unlicensed 'faux guides' exploit it: a helpful stranger offers directions or claims the tannery or a monument is 'this way' or 'closed', then leads you to a shop for commission and demands payment. Paid guiding by unlicensed guides has been illegal since 2007 — hire only a Ministry-licensed guide or use your riad's. At the Chouara tannery, the 'free' rooftop viewpoint comes with hard pressure to buy leather; a few dirhams tip is enough if you decline. Agree any price before a service and keep a downloaded offline map.
