Budapest's costliest tourist trap, long flagged by the US Embassy, is the bar scam: a friendly, well-dressed woman (sometimes met via a dating app) suggests a bar, orders freely, then the venue produces a bill of hundreds of euros enforced by menacing 'security'. Never let a stranger pick the bar, always check drink prices on a printed menu before ordering, and walk out of any place with no visible price list. For taxis, only use a booked cab (Főtaxi) or the Bolt app — never one idling at the station or airport — since some drivers steer passengers straight to the scam bars.
