Common scams — costumed 'Mozart' concert-ticket sellers, U-Bahn pickpockets
Buy concert tickets from the venue, not a costumed seller
Men in red frock-coats and powdered wigs selling 'Mozart' or 'Strauss' concert tickets around Stephansplatz, Graben and outside the Staatsoper push overpriced seats to student ensembles in rented halls — not the palace performances the costume implies; buy directly from a venue box office (Musikverein, Konzerthaus, Staatsoper) instead. Pickpocketing is Vienna's most common tourist crime, concentrated on the U1 and U3 lines and around Stephansplatz, Praterstern and the main stations — keep bags zipped and in front on crowded platforms and as doors close. Clipboard 'deaf-charity' petitions near the cathedral are a distraction cover for the same teams.
