Wear your bag away from the road; use only metered taxis
Naples' signature street crime is the 'scippo' — a moped rider snatching a bag, phone or camera from a pedestrian by the kerb; wear bags crossbody on the wall side and never walk holding your phone loosely near the road. From Napoli Centrale station, the airport and the port, insist on a white metered taxi or the official fixed 'tariffa predeterminata' into the centre, and refuse unmarked cars and 'my meter's broken' drivers. Pickpockets work the crowded Circumvesuviana line to Pompeii and Sorrento, the historic-centre streets around Spaccanapoli and packed buses — keep valuables in a front pocket and bags zipped.
